Knowing Hermione as we do, it's a pretty good guess that 
she was out buying books and supplies the day she got her 
Hogwarts letter or as soon as the shops opened the next 
day.  She could have practiced some more at home, but I 
am thinking that the Ministry's magic seismometers probably 
pick up so much activity during the week before school 
starts, from all the little firsties trying out their new 
wands, that they would only investigate a case that stood out. 

That's got me wondering how did Hermione and her parents 
find Diagon Alley the first time?
