On topic.  I don't think the year 1492 means anything in  Potterverse.  It 
just happened to be the exact number of years backwards  from the date JKR was 
writing about the birthday party that she wanted.   Certainly Nearly Headless 
Nick didn't sail with Columbus, and I doubt he met his  fate in Spain. :>)
