Now that you mention it, I think it was simply Snape's interest in 
Slytherin.  I don't believe that this was before Voldemort, though, 
In fact, I think it was right after he started.  I will explain.

Because of the dates on the James' and Lilly's graves, we can figure 
out when everything happened.  It says that they were both born in 
1960 and died in 1981.  This means that they would have started at 
Hogwarts in 1971, when they were 11 years old.  In Book 1, DD 
excuses peoples celebration to Minerva after Voldy was "killed" by 
saying that "they had little to celebrate for 11 years."  Since we 
know that this was when Harry's parents died, i.e. 1981, we can 
deduce that Voldemort started his reign of terror, or at least made 
it public, in 1970, a year before Lily or James or Snape started 
school.

Nate, who often has a tendency to get much more mathematical then is 
necessary.
