First of all, let me state that I belong to a couple of yahoo groups and have never had so much reading of posts as I have with this group! Y'all are very prolific!
Since we are discussing a work of fiction, it is assumed that whatever was put on the pages was what the author wanted to be there. Secondly, for those parents out there who are not perfect; have you ever behaved badly and disciplined out of anger? Later, you find yourself in a position where you needed to discipline again, and your past behavior guided the next 'discipline session'? Possibly, Harry did crack a bit, let his emotions get away with himself, and reverted back to his normal pattern of defending against his enemies...
