While I do not live in Britain, I do live in one of the commonwealth countries (New Zealand, to be precise)
You are perfectly correct, "to do a bunk" does mean to flee or leave the scene, usually in quite a hurry, and hoping to be not caught at whatever one was or was not doing.

Hope this helps, getting confirmation.  Any other phrases that are puzzling you?
