I believe one of the points that Dumbledore tried to drive home to
Harry is that it can be costly to underestimate people based on
limited knowledge.  I know many police officers and soldiers that are
completely harmless and frankly inept.  I also know many bankers,
doctors, stay at home mom, etc. that can be quite dangerous when
pressed.

Assuming a certain skill level in a person can cloud your observation
skills.  It seems fairly obvious to me that the was a lot of power
being thrown around in this battle since the ground was heating up and
cracking.
