First, I think it is WE who are forcing chronology
on the story, not the story errantly forcing chronology
on us. How do we know that Harry's own psychic needs
didn't guide him through the memories in an order
necessary for him to make sense of them? In other
word, Harry saw them in the order he needed to see
them.
Of course, over it all is the author and the needs of
the story forcing the order, but internally, I think
a fair explanation is the Harry was guided through
them in the order he needed to see them.
I think because they are chronologically-ish, we
are trying to force an absolute chronology on them.
It was just a thought.
