One thing to remember throughout the analysis of the actions of the
Marauders is that *almost* everything we know of them in their youth
we have seen through SNAPE's eyes via his memories. I believe that
perception is everything. Ask 5 people to recall an occasion or event
and you will hear 5 completely different stories.
There have been some criticisms of Lily for marrying James (someone we
are led to believe she disliked), but we don't have the luxury of
viewing their relationship through anyone's eyes but Snape's. It
would be lovely to see how their relationship developed from
adolescent disdain to marriage and family. However, unless JKR
surprises us with a prequel telling this tale, we will be doomed to
speculation.
I am enjoying everyone's comments. :^)
