It was not the whole truth but it was an interpretation of
the events. Dumbledore concealed the truth from Harry right
until and beyond death. At the end of OoTP he told Harry he
would now tell him the truth and lo and behold he didn't.
Harry was only ever told enough of the 'truth' to move him
on as far as Dumbledore wanted to move him at that time.
