people believe he was telling the truth because JKR says that is what
happened, and that Lily had a choice - that was what invoked the ancient
magic after all.  Now it could be that what JKR says is no longer treated as
canon, but Harry lived BECAUSE Lily didn't have to die.  (I'd quote JKR, but
Lexicon refuses to open to me just now...)
