I suspect that the first case of this happening was in one of the Tarzan novels (I am too lazy to look up exactly which one it was at the moment). The story involved a Tarzan lookalike who is starring in a Tarzan movie being filmed in Africa, who gets amnesia and thinks he's the real thing. The story ends with Tarzan going to Hollywood, and trying out for a part in a Tarzan movie, and being rejected because he's the wrong type.
