Lots of factories have chimneys.  Foundries are the worst.  Where I work, until two years or so ago, there was another factory - a foundry -across the road,  that when the chimney's 'smoked' at night, the resulting 'fall-out' ruined the paintwork on your car.

Before it was forced to clean up its act (ie send the stuff out at night when it thought no-one noticed), during the 1970s it used to blot out the sun during the day in the summer. 

That's some pollution.
