I think Dumbledore and Harry were in similar circumstances:
each had a role thrust upon them and, whether or not they
were the perfect person to perform that role, it was theirs and
it was their job to deal with it. Each did what he thought had
to be done. Both had flaws, both tried to counter them.
Together, and with the help of many others, they managed to
succeed - just.
It doesn't bother me that DD or HP had flaws or made mistakes,
because I think it shows their humanity. We ALL make mistakes;
we all have flaws. If they were perfect or always did the right
thing, the books would have much less appeal to me. I think
the world JKR has created seems more REAL for the fact that
the people in it seem like real people - with real histories, with
real failings. I think this is the basic reason for the appeal of
these books and the story itself.
