Yeah, James came across as a jerk...but did we ever see him through anyone else's memories, except Snape's? I mean actual memories, not story descriptions, like from Sirius or Lupin.  If we judge characters by they company they keep, James couldn't have been all bad - Sirius, Lupin...oh, wait...Worm Tail may just screw that theory....but still, Lily must have seen something in him.  

As for who annoyed me?  I might have to reread the series and see if someone pops out as exceedingly annoying...every character had moments that irritated me, although I might have to go with Dolores Umbridge...at least her initial appearances.  She later came as pretty evil, but the "sweetness and light" view that she seems to act with, especially early on, grated on me.
