The life debt you mean? It HAS some prospect - I mean, Dumbledore told
Harry that he'd be very glad for letting Pettigrew live - that
Voldemort would not want a servant in debt of Harry Potter. What ever
that's supposed to hint at.
We also know - from Dumbledore - that Snape owed a life debt to James
Potter. (and, failing to pay it off ended up protecting Harry?)
What deep magic is at work here? THAT might be part of the secret - if
there ever was one. (Dumbledore wouldn't need one if everyone else
did, IMO. That's why he never got to tell it, either :-) .)
