I think that Hagrid was more astonished by the fact that Lily and James' death at the hands one of the most feared dark wizard was explained so flippantly as a car crash, thus covering up the truth of their last night and sacrifices.
   
As for childbirth, it is dangerous and there are no guarantees in the process. Even today, a simple operation can go wrong.
