It really annoys me (but not me )

One thing that bothers me is that in POA (Scholastic paperback at 133)  Lupin 
says to the class "Nobody knows what a boggart looks like when he is  alone, 
. ."
but in OOP (Scholastic hardback at 169 - I finally started buying the  
hardbacks) Moody casts his eye up through the kitchen ceiling to the desk in the  
drawing room above and declares "yeah, I see it . . . Yeah, it's a boggart . .  
.Want me to go up and get rid of it, Molly?"
So, how did he know it was a boggart if no one knows what one looks like  
when it is alone?  I kind of wonder what Moody's boggart would be?
