The necklace looks to me like a locket.  ;0)

As for wandless fighting ... JKR said that the movies have 
inadvertently inserted things that figure into later books.  In the 
movies, we see quite a bit of worldless, wandless magic, particularly 
from Snape, as he walks into his classroom and shuts the blinds (are 
they blinds?  I don't remember.  Something on the windows, anyway) on 
the windows.  That's my guess!
