I think the generalization is simply unbelieveable.  All the rest of 
the characters have their flaws to which we can relate, but not these 
girls.  I was "a popular girl" in high school, too, but that sure 
didn't translate to "everyone" being in love with me ... in fact, far 
from it.  I think JKR's categorization with no real follow-up about 
their characters in the books creates very flat characters -- shocking, 
compared to how well she's fleshed out the rest of the characters.
