I'm inclined to think you're right. There seems to be a hidden
connection between Snape and Lily, though the exact nature of it isn't
clear. I think the awful boy isn't James, since Harry jumps to that
conclusion and Petunia doesn't respond. Having it be Sirius or Lupin
seems rather dull to me. Why not just let it be James? Peter is an
intriguing possibility, especially if he and Petunia speak after he's
turned sides. But at that point she hasn't had contact with Lily in a
year or more, so the potential is limited.
