I think that was mainly put in as a callback to (I believe) OoTP -- I
don't have the book with me, but I'm pretty sure Petunia says she
heard about the Dementors when she overheard Lily talking to "that
awful boy". We were meant to assume, like Harry did, that the awful
boy was James, but many suspected that it was actually Snape. Good
call.
