I thought it was actually LV's soul, or what was left of it.   It's what was 
left over, the maimed part of his soul where as Harry's was whole and 
"unscathed" (pg. 706), even WITHOUT glasses.   His soul was unmarred, 
Voldemort's was clearly in bad shape.   They both appear at King's Cross and 
then return to consciousness.
