And if she had lived, the possibility existed that she
would eventually come around and love Snape, despite
his many flaws.  Not that it would have happened right
away, but he could at least prove his love to her and
win her in the future.

I'm not sure I fully agree with Leslie, but it seemed
more to me that every time he saw Harry's green eyes,
so much like his mother's, it reminded Snape that he
had failed to save the one person he had loved, and
had for a while given him much needed friendship and
SOME one to talk to regarding the wizarding world and
his home life. That Lily knew about his home life says
that he trusted her a lot.  Probably more than he
trusted anyone other than Dumbledore.

Someone long ago pointed out that Snape was the
Potionsmaster.  He worked over cauldrons and with many
a different ingredients.  A lot of his 'greasy' hair
could be due to the long hours making potions.  (Ever
work at a fast food place? You learn that the grease
gets everywhere.) 

If he is consistently working with ingredients that
have an oil base, they easily could get in his hair. 
hygiene, in my opinion, isn't the problem.
