I think it's because his patronus was built up as being this big 
secret/would be a spoiler/etc.

And in retrospect it seems so simple. He didn't tell anyone because 
Snape asked him not to.

Leading theory seems to be that it was Merope, in book 6. I think a lot 
of people assumed it was going to be book 7 because we'd all built up 
"It's going to be Petunia! or it's going to be Dudley!"
