During the whole "Mudblood" incident with Snape, Lily and James were
not really friends at this point.  If anything, she thought James was a show off.  If this incident marks the end of Lily and Snape's
friendship, it is possible that James and the gang never really knew
how close Lily and Snape had been before Lily and James became involved in each other.  The guys all hated Snape already and it is possible that Lily just decided to stop defending him because he was well on this way to becoming a Death Eater.
