Actually, that's not entirely true. Remember Crabb setting fire to
the Room of Requirement and trapping them all? Malfoy could easily
have abandoned his friends and saved himself. In fact, I think that's
what most people would have expected, but instead he made a real
effort to save Goyle and seemed genuinely shaken by Crab's death.
That may not be enough to completely redeem him for all the rotten
things he's done, but it is and interesting bit of character development.
