That is entirely the point, that he was damaged goods before and after.
His love for Lily, his desire to redeem something of worth from his
actions gave him what little value as a human that he had. Those of us
that wanted him to be more than that, wanted him to be a truly worthy
character, a Sydney Carton, we were, I was, taken aback that his arc
could be dealt with in such a pragmatic and almost flat way. Snape
loved Lily. Snape betrayed Lily and James. Snape lived the rest of his
life trying to make up for that. That's all. It kept hiim from being a
death eater, which he surely would have stayed save his remorse. And
that's it. It's very unnerving the effort some of us put into
understanding Snape and that's all there is basically. I find it calls
for a re-examination of many things.
