I agree, totally.
That's why Snape stands in such stark relief above the background of
the story, because he's so *real.* JKR says he's nasty, horrible, --
but just compare him to the true, banal evil that Voldemort
represents, and you see the difference.
The shadow self is, in general, not necessarily evil. It contains
parts of you that you've learned to *disapprove of,* which may
include such lovely things as a wish to be a musician instead of
getting a "real" job. Snape apparently contains many things of which
JKR disapproves, but plenty of us find okay or even admirable.
I'm left wishing for the book this could have been, if only...
