Sorry, but why does *that* have to be the 'message' that one takes from 
situation?  

How about a much plainer but still true one:  'War sucks'

Bad things happen in real life which have no 'message' attached to 
them.  To assume that because this is a work of fiction that every 
single character's outcome has a message about what the author feels or 
believes about that person seems a stretch to me.
