Maybe its becuase as former military I was taught that self defense or
defense of others changes actions that are normally immoral or wrong such as
say shooting a weapon to an acceptable course of action, but I don't have a
problem with the "good guys" using the unforgivable curses. Say what you
will. It was war. The enemy had no compunction about using those same
curses. Its not as though Harry woke up one fine morning and decided to go
torture someone for fun and games.
