Well ... why were my dad's seven brothers killed in WWII?  Why did my 
mother's brother lose an arm in Vietnam?  Why did my husband's friend 
get shot and killed right next to him in the first Gulf War?  

Because it's war.  People die during war -- there's rarely a purpose.
