Thanks. :)  I'm glad that my posting this line of thought served a
purpose.  I really agonized over doing it; I'm still not sure if I
shouldn't have just kept my mouth shut, because there's no way to talk
about this without it being incredibly hurtful both to people who see
it and people who don't.  

That's enough for on this for me... it's really not fun to talk about
it.
