I totally agree with all you said. In the days of slavery here in the US,
slave owners often said something I've heard characters in the books say
several times. "They're happy this way." Those statements always make me
slightly sick to my stomach when I read it, even from characters I love,
such as Ron. Possibly even more so when it's a character like Ron. I don't
think the reader is supposed to accept elf enslavement easily. So many of
the statements made about it in canon are exactly the kinds of rhetoric that
has been used for generations all over the world to justify slavery. I
think Hermione is on the right track by wanting to free them, though she's
going about it in the wrong way.
