Bart:
In the real world, there are plenty of cases where organs can be in failure, you
are going to die very soon, but you don't die immediately. My belief is that
when Morty left Quirrel's body, there were some leftover "life energies"
(or whatever you want to call them), but Quirrel no longer had the ability to create
new life energies. So he was able to remain alive for a few minutes after Morty
left, but there was no way to save him.
