Geoff:
It's interesting that that thought has never occurred to me. I've 
always assumed that the Hat summoned the sword from somewhere 
else - a variant of Apparating or Portkeying perhaps?

While on the subject of the Sorting Hat, it has always intrigued me that 
it appears to be sentient or semi-sentient. What /is/ the Hat really? 
Like the portraits, it interacts with people around it but how far are it's 
deliberations original?
