Finwitch:

Well, Sirius, while moving Snape's body told Harry about Harry's
parents making him Harry's guardian (by will?) - but offering Harry
a choice. His being Harry's 'godfather' may or may not have anything
to do with it.

Still... it gives him *some* claim.

I suppose it *could* be a magical bond of sorts - a magically
binding contract at least. An obligation to protect, I think.

Anyway, as obsessed as Sirius was about catching the rat - it did
not come trough until he realized Harry being in danger of the rat
being in Hogwarts... and THAT, I believe, really got him out?

And as reckless as Sirius might have been -- he *did* stay at 12 GP
until Harry needed him. And I think that Sirius needed Harry to keep
his sanity in decent level after Azckaban.
