Actually, Snape should know that Prongs was James Potter, as well.
Sirius used the nickname right in the middle of Snape's Worst Memory
(I mean the part of it where Snape is being attacked - so he
certainly heard it). Not to mention that Sirius's public use of the
nickname in front of half the year suggests he commonly used it in
public.
When he says 'directly from the manufacturers', I think he means the
Marauders. He probably figures Harry may have inherited it. I also
think he may well also have recognized the style of insult preferred
by the manufacturers.
I always thought his reason for dragging Lupin into it was similar to
his typical style of dealing with Harry's transgressions - giving him
a chance to come clean.
