Betsy Hp:
I'm pretty sure young Slytherins realize that they're in the despised
House right at their sorting. We've seen the Weasley twins hiss little
ones sorted into Slytherin. And while the twins are rather nasty in
and of themselves, the fact that no one tried to stop them (either
teacher or prefect) suggests to me that this sort of behavior is rather
typical.

I've always pictured one of the Slytherin prefects giving the first
years a sort of welcome to Slytherin talk where they're told that
everyone in the school will think the worst of them, but not to worry,
the rest of the school sucks and Slytherins stand up for their own.
