I think that Hermione has realized the meaning of the saying "do not let the
best be the enemy of the good."  House elve liberation as a long term goal is
probably her ideal, but IN THE MEANTIME, she realizes that for most house elves
the choice would be between a kind master and a cruel one, and a kind one is
assuredly better.
