It strikes me (though I don't think it had before) that it's a bit
surprising that no-one's come up with a charm to defend against
Expelliarmus.

Of course, in the context of the books, and there is nothing else, it
has to work as successfully as it does, even after it's recognised as
Harry's 'signature' spell. But it's not like he invented it, and it
just strikes me as a bit silly that it can always be used to disarm an
opponent. A careful duellist would, you'd think, guard against it.

As an aside, looking up Harry's use of it against Stan Shunpike during
the 7HP flight scene, I found the following when Lupin is warning
Harry not use Expelliarmus too often, Harry takes umbrage at the
suggestion that he should have used something else:

'Lupin was making Harry feel idiotic, and yet there was still a grain
of defiance in him.

"I won't blast people out of my way just because they're there," said
Harry. "That's Voldemort's job." ' [DH: UKpb: 64] Oh but you will,
Harry - just wait till you're in the Ravenclaw commonroom. <eg>
