Well, Amanda, this is because Rowling used Harry's point of 
view, and hating or loving someone is a complex thing. If you 
are confessed someone is bad (or don't like you in particular) 
it's mentally difficult to change this image/point of view. A 
coach told me "our way of thinking/ideas is influencing our 
experiences.", and this is the case with Harry. He didn't 
know why Snape didn't like him, and can't understand why Snape 
is doing what he did.

Snape expected to see James in Harry, So he saw James and his 
arrogance and bad character.
