I've always felt that this story line wasn't anti slavery but pro don't
judge a book by its cover. Although to Hermione the house elves were
slaves who needed to be freed, they themselves didn't feel the need to
be free. Perhaps she wrote this as a moral to people who seem to feel
the need to inflict their beliefs on others, no matter how much they
are unwanted.
