Geoff:
But isn't this just JKR giving us a reflection of the real world?

Every day we hear of people fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan being killed 
in this way  - suddenly, unexpectedly and often needlessly or pointlessly. 
Very few people go out in a really heroic way.

Sad but........
