Amy:

I agree that in essentials, most of the characters in HP stay the 
same (in fact, I also agree that it adds to the appeal of the story); 
usually, like in the case of Snape, it's just that knowing them 
better (their motivations and whatnot) helps to make other characters 
understand them better. 

I don't know if I agree that Dudley didn't change throughout the 
story, though, he actually seems like one of the exceptions. I really 
don't think it was a case of his just suddenly thinking that Harry 
was cool, since he saved his life -- remember that he actually DID 
blame Harry for the attack initially, when Petunia and Vernon asked 
what had happened. I've tried, but I really can't see the Dudley in 
DH as the same one from PS; if nothing else, I can't imagine PS!
Dudley, or many of his later incarnations, doing anything like making 
tea for someone, no matter how cool he thought they were.
