Pippin:
I don't think James had ever experienced much rejection in his life --
not from people whose acceptance he wanted. Being called toerag 
by someone who was obviously attracted to him but was fighting 
those feelings because she didn't approve of him
seems to have been a new experience. 

IMO, it took him a while, but he finally realized she might stop fighting
her attraction to him if he stopped hexing people for fun. The way she 
dropped Snape may have been a wake up call. But also, I think he just 
grew up  and didn't need to test his limits any more.
