I thought Harry went after a big black dog who was trying to
get Ron.  He had no idea at the time that Sirius was involved
at all.  When he was already in the presence of Sirius and
Sirius had stolen Harry's wand, then Harry went after him.

But I agree that he wasn't thinking about whether Sirius was
trying to kill HIM, he was angry because Sirius had helped
get his parents killed.
