It was actually this post that made me think of the Star Trek 
TNG `Time's Arrow' episode.  The aliens had a portal where they 
would go to a point in a race's civilization where a widely spread 
epidemic was prevalent.  Sickness and disease would only augment the 
depression/despair, and basically be a feeding ground.
