I think the tree limb was accidental magic. Sort of like some of the
things that Harry did before he went to Hogwarts.
It wasn't Little Snape killing flies, it was teen Snape. And to quote
a line from "Toy Story" That ain't no happy kid." That always seemed
such a sad image to me, and I think it's likely post-Lily-Snape, home
for the summer, missing the friendship he had with her. JMHO
