I agree that there were signs early on that there was some
attraction at least between Ron and Hermione. Spending all
afternoon in the bathroom crying because a boy made a callous
remark seems to indicate that she cares about this boy's opinion
of her in particular. I also think that Hermione's behavior
toward Ron in the first book indicated that she liked him,
but didn't really know what to do about it. I saw her frequent
correction of him in the same light as the boy who pulls a
girl's hair to show that he likes her.

I think that they could have a very happy relationship in the
long term, and that their growing up together largely contributes
to the quality of their relationship. Ron seems to teach her how
to take herself less seriously, and Hermione teaches him to be
more responsible.
