thinks "of water monsters, of giant serpents, of demons" etc. Maybe JKR
doesn't want *us* to know either, that's why DD doesn't explain what
the things in the water are.

Mystery & suspense are practically like peanut butter & jelly in
writing, esp. in fiction. The whole reason why the creatures in the
lake scene in the book was so scary when I first read it is because we
don't know what's in there, so we're forced to kind of speculate on
what could really be in there. JKR could want us to speculate on
what's really in the lake & what the creatures themselves truly are
instead of knowing for sure.
